Home Office
The tall ceilings, about 11 feet, enhance the space and give a sense of scale. Throughout the house, the furniture, art, and accessories have an undecorated sense of being “thrown together” which we greatly admire. The mid-century chairs can be pulled up for a conference. The display cabinet is filled with vases and other objet from the 1930s and '40s. Their light colors show up well against the dark wood.

Library
Some contemporary ceramic sculpture is mixed with a mid-century vase. The large painting is of Johannesburg, painted about 30 years ago. One of the themes throughout this house is about not needing much color, fabrics, and window treatments in order to let the accessories and art show through to best advantage.

Hallway Looking Into Master Bedroom
The arrangement of the artwork is relatively haphazard, creating a sense of spontaneity. The very specific -- and educated -- taste of the homeowner is very clear. The sculptural form on the wall is an English wall sconce from the early 1940s.

Master Bedroom
Facial images in a contemporary art piece are juxtaposed with more sentimental portraits from the first half of the 20th Century. The relatively humble bedcovering and lack of headboard once again underscores the homeowner’s collections. No distractions here!

Here is a very special European drop-leaf secretary cabinet, adorned with sculptures and contemporary artwork. Most of the surfaces in this home have either reading material or beautiful objects.

Similarly framed artwork (all behind glass) surrounds an enameled and polished chrome Art Deco sconce.

Foyer with Living Room View
The colorful Art Deco rugs pick up the Art Deco, early 20th Century objet, as well as the more contemporary artwork. Also notice that some pieces have a distinct African theme.

Living Room
The tall ceiling and double-hung windows accommodate the homeowner's vast collection of decorative and art elements, including moderne furniture, a Nichols rug, contemporary ceramic sculpture, and mid-century ornaments.

The symmetrical arrangement of the paintings and mirrors above a pair of chairs on the main wall is a stark counterpoint to the large collection of items that the homeowner has accumulated over many years.

The homeowner's collections -- none of which have been purchased from eBay, by the by -- are so many that they are arranged on the floor.

Entry Foyer 1
The crouching figure on the mirrored table from the 1930s welcomes visitors to the house. The Art Deco rug’s shocking color is a great bridge between the early 20th Century items and the modern pieces.

Entry Foyer 2
Of course the phone and reading material are on the floor! The paintings are hung floor to ceiling. They’re sometimes switched with the ones in the closets, a great idea to keep collections fresh by rotating their positions and display periods.

Dining Room
The table and chairs are Secessionist which appear quite fresh and contemporary in the space. The stark black is a refreshing break from all the visual interest.

Kitchen Entry
The kitchen has polished cement floors and glazed walls. The counters are filled with the homeowner's collections, each a wonderful piece that mostly reflect's the collector's personality: creative, colorful, whimsical.

Living Room 4
The Colonial Deco furniture is sculptural and comfortable. Note the bowl under the chair and the view of the enclosed garden through the 19th Century style window.

No martini is going to fit on this cocktail table! And "Where’s Waldo?" Look closely and you'll spy the fireplace beneath the large painting and behind the glass table.

Entry Foyer 3
Amongst all the art, there are some wonderful textiles! The ethnic throw on the sofa and the antique pillows add to the feel of the space. The Regency chairs in the hall seem fresh and modern with all that’s around them.

Dining Room 2
A pair of stylish early 20th Century Scottish chairs flank a very unstylish electric fireplace from the same period. Somehow the fireplace -- that’s original to the house -- seems quite comfortable in the room. To the right of the dining table is a bar from the 1940s that was custom designed for another house in the neighborhood.

Dining Room 3
The en fillade layout of the rooms in this house is pleasing and elegant. The round Art Deco display cabinet is a strong juxtaposition to the angular dining table and chairs.

Living Room 6
The throw pillows are as much a part of the homeowner's collections as anything else. They repose comfortably on a moderne sofa.

Library 2
The Corbu style sofa and the 1950s standard lamp look great in front of the shelves that are filled with books and items that the owner has collected, from vases to an old radio.
